Generic Zithromax for the Treatment of Upper Respiratory Tract Infections

scientists are studying generic Zithromax

The high effectiveness of the main substance Azithromycin has been proved in numerous studies. So, how does Zithromax generic helps to fight infections of the upper respiratory tract in adults, such as tonsillopharyngitis, acute otitis media, sinusitis?  As for clinical efficacy, which is 93-100%, and for the degree of eradication of the pathogen (80-99%), azithromycin, administered by a 3-day course at a dose of 500 mg / day, is not inferior to phenoxymethylpenicillin once, and other new macrolides – roxithromycin , clarithromycin, as well as oral cephalosporin cefaclor.

In patients with acute tonsillopharyngitis, the administration of azithromycin leads to a more rapid disappearance of clinical symptoms and an improvement in the general condition than with the use of phenoxymethylpenicillin. At the same time, in a randomized study, it was found that a 5-day course of azithromycin for tonsillopharyngitis in adults is inferior in effectiveness to both 3-day treatment and phenoxymethylpenicillin taken 10 days. Pharmacoeconomic analysis demonstrates the benefits of azithromycin used for tonsillofaringitis for 3 days, compared with a 10-day course of roxithromycin, in terms of cost-effectiveness.

Zithromax Generic Will Help You to Treat Urogenital Infections

I have conducted research and found out that convincing evidence has been obtained in several controlled studies that, when taken at a dose of 1 g, the antibiotic has a pronounced therapeutic effect on urethritis and cervicitis, especially chlamydial etiology, providing the same high level of pathogen eradication (85-100%), as well as doxycycline prescribed 7-day course. A high level of eradication of C. trachomatis is also confirmed in the study in the long-term period – at 14, 21 and 35 days after treatment. Zithromax has been officially recommended for the treatment of acute urogenital chlamydial infections as an alternative to doxycycline.

In Croatia, the first data on the possibility of using azithromycin for chlamydial infection in pregnant women were obtained. In a comparative study, it was established that in terms of clinical and bacteriological efficacy in cervicitis caused by C. trachomatis, azithromycin in a dose of 1 g once is not inferior to erythromycin administered 500 mg 4 times a day for 10 days. There were no differences in pregnancy outcomes between the groups. The clinical efficacy of azithromycin in patients with chancroid with a single dose of 1 g is 89-92%.

According to the results of several studies, a single dose of 1 g of azithromycin for acute gonorrhea provides efficacy at the level of 90-93% and almost the same degree of eradication of gonococcus. Increasing the dose to 2 g increased the level of efficiency to 99%, but more than one-third of the patients had adverse reactions from the gastrointestinal tract, and in 17% they were regarded as severe. Currently, a single dose of azithromycin for gonorrhea is not generally accepted.

Preliminary pilot data were obtained on the effectiveness of azithromycin in early syphilis. The purpose of the drug in a dose of 500 mg per day for 10 days or 500 mg every other day to a total dose of 3 g is accompanied by faster than with the use of benzylpenicillin and erythromycin, the positive dynamics of the clinical condition of patients. Azithromycin, the main substance of Zithromax generic, is superior to erythromycin in T. pallidum eradication, but inferior to penicillin.

In severe forms of infectious and inflammatory diseases of the pelvic organs, which require inpatient treatment, azithromycin is effective when used as a step-by-step scheme: in the first 1-2 days, 500 mg/day intravenously, then 250 mg/day orally to the general course of 7 days . If the etiology of this infection assumes the role of an anaerobic pathogen, azithromycin should be used in combination with a drug with high anti-anaerobic activity.

Zithromax Generic is safe!

Macrolides are one of the safest classes of antibiotics. The largest safety study included 6,600 patients (42% of women, 58% of men; 61% of those over 16). Adverse events (AEs) were observed in 15.4% of patients, and mostly (12.6%) on the part of the gastrointestinal tract. In less than 1.5% of cases, symptoms of the nervous system, cardiovascular system, skin, and liver were noted. Azithromycin was well tolerated by both young and elderly patients. Of all the AEs, 64% were light, 30% were moderate and 6% were severe. Clinically insignificant deviations of leukocyte, hemoglobin, platelet, creatinine, urea, potassium, and calcium levels were also noted.

The overall incidence of AE when taking azithromycin in children does not exceed 9%, with more than half of them (5.3%) also presenting symptoms from the gastrointestinal tract: diarrhea – 1-6%, abdominal pain – 1-4%, nausea – 0.5–2%, vomiting — 1–6%. According to the safety of use in pregnant women, Zithromax belongs to the category “B” of the FDA – drugs with which the risk of fetal damage is low and there is no evidence of toxic effect on the fetus in animal studies.

So, now you know that Zithromax Generic is really helpful when you have either urogenital infections or respiratory infections. Hope this information will help you to feel free from doubts whether to take it or not.
